In wireless sensor networks with image data gathering, redundant information is a challenge for the network having energy limitation. One way to handle redundancy is to remove it in global sense by cluster head node which then forward data having minimal redundancy to sink, hence, saving energy in the transmission. In this paper, we propose an alternate scheme to handle redundancy at the local level, where, each node having redundant information participates in collaborative data transmission to reduce energy consumption. The participating sensor nodes transmit priority based sub-images resulting from layered coding scheme. Moreover, exploiting channel state information further provides reduction in energy consumption per image transmission. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme improves lifetime of the network in all channel conditions and the improvement increases with severity of fading of the channel.
