Encryption delay can be the limiting factor when transmitting data in small networks such as personal area networks (PANs) and small office‐home office networks (SOHOs). The problem arises when using predetermined encryption levels and thus the network delay is dependant on the method of encryption. In this paper, a more efficient method for conserving bandwidth in multipath networks is proposed when using advanced encryption standard (AES) as the encryption algorithm. By lowering the available choices of AES variants from 3 to 2, we can increase the encryption speed process while sacrificing a nonsignificant amount of security. In our setup, the network component that enforces the encryption of the packets decides between AES 128 and 192 and then we compare the results with the ones that use all 3 variants. This is achieved through multiple simulations runs and gathering of their results
