Statistical Study of SHVC Depth Partitioning and Mode Selection for Intra Only Configuration

An efficient amendment for coding efficiency was proved for the scalable extension of the High Efficiency Video Coding (SHVC). In this paper, a brief description of its new scalability features was presented providing a further improve of the Enhancement Layer (EL) coding efficiency. Furthermore, a statistical study, at the prediction module, was detailed for the all-intra configuration. We depict thereafter intra mode distribution for all prediction bloc sizes, in both Base and Enhancement Layer (BL and EL). Experimental results on several test sequences show that the most chosen modes were almost DC, Planar, vertical or horizontal mode with percentages of use exceeding 40% for some cases.
