Models with large extra dimensions

We discuss the history of the hypothesis about the extra dimensions and the physics of models with large extra dimensions with an emphasis on the Randall-Sundrum model with two branes. For this model the physical degrees of freedom are explicitly isolated, which include the massless graviton, a tower of massive gravitons and a massless scalar, -the radion. The couplings of these fields to matter are shown to be different on different branes. In particular, it turns out that the original Randall-Sundrum model is phenomenologically unacceptable for the observer on the brane with negative tension, because the massless radion couples too strongly to matter on this brane; this flaw can be eliminated by stabilizing the distance between the branes, which makes the radion massive. We discuss in detail the phenomenology of the stabilized Randall-Sundrum model in the cases, where the center of mass energy is below or above the production threshhold of the first Kaluza-Klein resonance. For both cases we found specific changes of the distribution tails for the processes of SM particles scattering at the Tevatron and the LHC.
