This paper aims to create a proposal for a unified modelling of event processing networks (EPNs), giving credit to both the logical model and the technical implementation of EPNs. For that purpose, it is necessary to find a model, which enables to define the “Gestalt” of events on a conceptual level, the steps of event processing and creation by means of a defined event hierarchy and the form of inter-event relationships, like temporal and causal ones. The model will further need to combine these model-specific traits with the technical side of EPNs, like platform implementation and design specifics. The paper then identifies general requirements for EPN models based on the attributes derived from event processing in general and existing models. Finally, the paper assesses how existing EPN models fulfil those requirements, by analyzing the EPiA model as a case study.
