The Internet of Things (IoT) presents a new era of smart and connected devices. This technology includes machine-to-machine (M2M) devices that serves as middleware for accessing information. The key enabler for monitoring and control for various sensor devices lies on their connection to the internet for data exchanged. The connectivity is important to ensure reliable data transfer either through point to point communication or multi-hop communication. This paper studies the performance of data delivery for outdoor deployment and presents the effects of multi-hop communications on packet delivery compared to point to point communications when using Zigbee wireless modules. The experiment uses soil moisture, temperature and humidity sensor as data generator. The experiment results show that packet loss increases from 10 percent to 80 percent when multi-hop communication is used compared to point to point communications. This results shows that the reliability for data transfer is compromised when multi-hop communication is used.
