In this paper, an adaptive algorithm for channel assignment and load balancing in elastic WLANs is proposed. In particular, the proposed algorithm consists of three main operations. First, adaptively, activating/ deactivating access points (APs) in a multi-cell WLAN according to the number of users and their locations in the network. Then, an optimal channel assignment for the active APs is performed in order to minimize the total interference at all active APs. This is followed by load balancing among the remaining active APs in such a way that all active APs have as equal traffic as possible in order to maximize the utilization of all active APs.
