SYSTEMS DETAIL NOTE: ABSTRACT: The Seventeenth Annual Working Conference on Database and Applications Security was held in conjunction with the annual meeting of the IFIP Working Group 11.3 at Estes Park, Colorado on August 4-6, 2003. The purposes of the three-day conference were: (I) To provide a forum for the international information assurance community to discuss in depth the current state of research and practice in information assurance in general, and database and applications security in particulars, (II) To enable participants to expand their knowledge in information assurance through personal contact with other researchers and practitioners in the field, and (III) To disseminate widely the results of the conference and accompanying discussions, including original research, practical experiences and innovative ideas in information assurance and database and applications security. Revised versions of the conference papers will be published in a book: Advances in Database and Applications Security, Sabrina De Capitani de Vimercati, Indrajit Ray and Indrakshi Ray (Eds.), Kluwer, Norwell, Massachusetts, 2004. The ONR grant subsidized the expenses of ten conference participants, five faculty members, four students and one retired federal government employee. To increase student participation and foster interaction with senior researchers, the grant covered almost all the travel expenses incurred by the four students.
