Energy saving cluster head selection in wireless sensor networks for internet of things applications

Aniji John, Anagha Rajput, K. Vinoth Babu · 2017

Internet of things (IoT) connects the technologies which includes sensing, communication, networking and cloud computing in wide reaching sensing territory. The most suitable infrastructure for IoT applications inorder to monitor the network is wireless sensor networks (WSN). With the aim of extending the lifetime of sensor nodes deployed for sensing, energy efficient cluster head (CH) selection schemes are developed. Energy saving of these sensor nodes are unavoidable to avoid quick battery drain. Thus, an energy saving CH selection (ESCHS) method is put forward to ameliorate the network lifetime of the systems developed for IoT applications. This method makes use of the idea of uniform clustering for cluster formation. CH is chosen based on residual energy of individual sensor nodes. The node which has residual energy higher than the average residual energy of the respective cluster is chosen to qualify as CH The outcomes exhibit that the suggested method performs superior to the existing methods in terms of energy saving and network lifetime.
