The Sum of Absolute Transformed Differences (SATD) calculation is one of the most time-consuming operations of the state-of-the-art video encoders. This work proposes a sequential SATD architecture based on 8×8 Hadamard Transform employing efficient adder and subtractor compressors. Synthesis results for 45 nm technology show that our SATD architecture when using adder and subtractor compressors saves power dissipation by 14.4% (on average) when compared with the baseline SATD architecture implemented using the adder from the synthesis tool. Furthermore, our architecture using 3-2 and 42 adder and subtractor compressors is 10% more energy-efficient than state-of-the-art SATD architectures.
