With the advent of smart grid concept, a large number of smart meters and monitors will be deployed for broad observability and real-time monitoring of the behavior of power system. An important factor for the implementation of smart grid is the introduction of Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) or Synchrophasor in power system. The current Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) technique measures 1 sample in every 2-4 seconds whereas PMU measures 10-60 samples per second. Huge storage space and large channel bandwidth will be needed for exchanging information. Hence, power system data compression becomes very much essential. In this paper, Wavelet Transform has been used for PMU generated data compression. Two discrete wavelets, namely Daubechies 2 (db2) and Coiflet 1 (coif1) have been used for the compression purpose. Results show that db2 is comparatively better than coif1 for compression of PMU generated signal.
