In any large scientific installation the idea of keeping experimental data on thousands of sheets of paper is as outmoded as a scientist using a mercury–in–glass thermometer for high precision temperature measurement. The 1960s and 1970s have seen the computer change from an optional 'numbercruncher' to an essential controller, logger and data store as well as calculator.
