A b str a c t.A switched probabilistic I /O autom aton is a special kind of probabilistic I/O autom ato n (PIO A), enriched w ith an explicit mech anism to exchange control w ith its environm ent.Every closed system of sw itched au to m ata satisfies th e key p roperty th a t, in any reachable state, a t m ost one com ponent au to m ato n is active.We define a tracebased sem antics for switched PIO A s and prove it is com positional.We also propose switch extensions of an arb itra ry PIO A an d use these ex tensions to define a new trace-based sem antics for PIOAs.
