An IoT Application-Layer Protocol Modem: A Case Study on Interfacing IEEE 1888 with AT Commands

In IoT, communication modules such as Wi-Fi, LTE, Bluetooth are essential for connecting sensors, actuators, facilities, and buildings. Such communication modules have been recently available with 3 USD in the market but they provide only lower-layer communication interfaces via AT commands. In this paper, we present our study on implementing an IoT application-layer protocol on such a communication module with designing AT command interface for the application-layer protocol. With our prototype, we demonstrate that this module design allows application developers to easily use an IoT protocol.
