The theory of syntactic pattern recognition provides effective thought for multifunction radar (MFR) behaviour analysis. However, the hierarchical structure for MFR signals only applies to a part of pulse-Doppler (PD) radars, and cannot be promoted to most normal radar systems. Some conceptions in the syntactic model are extended, and the radar words are expressed with pulse patterns instead of the pulse time-of-arrival (TOA) sequences. The extended model contains more information, making the radar word easier to be recognized and analysed. By combining the radar word with pulse pattern, the application of syntactic model can be expanded from specific PD radars to all the pulse radars. The proposed extended hierarchical structure for MFR signals is of practical significance in radar emitter recognition, operating mode recognition and MFR signal prediction.
