Extraction of Human face features plays an important role in human face analysis, visual interpretation and human face recognition. Detecting human face features is a vital role in the variety of applications such as facial animation, face recognition, human image database management and human computer interface, etc. This paper presents a survey of different techniques applied for face detection and extraction of facial features. As a human face contains various parts (e.g., nose, eyes, mustache, etc.) of different shapes, many techniques are available for extraction of facial parts for different purposes. We intend to use the extracted features to implement a query driven passport photo retrieval system. We would like to show whether existing techniques are suitable for such system and what the missing gaps are. Therefore, a detailed study and analysis of all existing techniques are required. This paper carries out survey and analysis of work on extraction of important face parts such as eye, lips, nose, beard, and mustache. The paper also surveys tools and technologies used for such extraction, and also discusses available dataset.
