This paper proposes a novel and efficient global contrast enhancement technique for dark images and low-light videos, using the Raised Cosine Adaptive Gamma Correction (RC-AGC). It modifies the input image histogram dependent adaptive parameter γ with a raised cosine envelope for histogram equalization. The parameters of the raised cosine function are suitably adjusted to meet the dynamic range constraints. Analysis and simulations show superior performance with the new transformation function. The smooth variation of the cosine curve at all points is a significant contributor to image quality. Proposed method reports much higher contrast, impressive enhancement metrics and more natural looking images compared to five state-of-the-art techniques. Computation time analysis shows that RC-AGC leads to faster implementation with limited resources.
