Advanced automation system incorporated in a smart home does not use thought or brain signal to activate and control home appliances. A suitable imaginative activity has to be designed, and suitable parameters have to be determined before neuro-based home appliance system is developed. This paper describes the time-frequency analysis of EEG signals to extract the executed and imagined hand grasping information from the signal for activating and controlling home appliance. The EEG signals were recorded using Open BCI and then processed and analysed using Short-time Fourier transform. It was found that Short-time Fourier transform could extract the executed and imagined hand grasping successfully. The amplitude of EEG signal in time-domain and the amplitude of its spectrum have to be used as parameters to activate and control the neuro-based home appliance system.
