The α-β Filter for Tracking Maneuvering Objects with LFM Waveforms

M. A. Murzova, Vladimir E. Farber · 2017

A linear frequency modulated (LFM) waveform is widely used for tracking moving objects. However, the range-Doppler coupling of LFM waveform can both improve and worsen the track accuracy in a radial coordinate. Besides that, while tracking maneuvering objects, an α-β-filter develops a lag error in its estimates and position estimate variance does not accurately represent actual position error. Therefore, in this paper, the features of α-β-filter processing measurements from LFM waveforms are studied. Analysis of total variance which equals to the sum of the position estimate variance and position lag error is carried out. An optimal relation between α and β, at which the total variance reaches a minimum, is derived. In doing so, using this α-β-relationship and α-β-filter stability conditions, a feasible region of the filter parameters is derived in dependence on the range-Doppler coupling coefficient.
