The competition for viewers has grown rapidly in recent years between cable, satellite, and telephone utilities. Adding to the battle for consumers, an increasing amount of content is becoming available directly through the Internet. In order to compete, each of these entities must provide more content, higher quality content and make the content available at any time while continuing to offer all this at a competitive price. MPEG-4 appears to be a technology that can move distributors in that direction. This is a replacement analysis that shows the tradeoff between declining technology prices and losses due to not implementing those technologies in a timely manner. The analysis provides a model which distributors can use to decide when the optimal time will be to move to MPEG-4.
