Chaos, deterministic non-periodic flow, for chip-package-board interactive PUF

This paper presents a new concept of PUF based on a chaotic behavior. Chaos is essentially not a random phenomenon but a deterministic non-periodic flow which can be utilized to extract reproducible unique ID entropy. The strong parametric sensitivity of the chaos guarantees ID variety and unclonability over unpredictable manufacturing variations. An undesirable disturbance due to dynamic parametric fluctuations can be removed by circuit-level feedback compensation together with mixed-signal post-processing for stable and long ID reproduction. The proposed chaos PUF is silicon-prototyped in 0.18pm CMOS for the proof of concept. A compact 750pm2chaos oscillator PUF successfully reproduces 512-bit unique ID with >98% stability. The proposed chaos PUF integrated with an inductive-coupling coil demonstrates chip-package-board interactive PUF for the first time with extended ID traceability including not only chip fabrication but also package and board assembly steps for advanced secure supply chain.
