In this document we will first look at the Smartphone industry from its early beginning as simple cellular technology, showing the competitors and respective market shares over time as technology advancements changed the competitive landscape. This will clearly show how market demand for Smartphone technology has changed the market leaders over the last decade. Next we will look at the RIM and Apple discuss their corporate, technology and business strategies as it relates to the Smartphone market. We will discuss their target markets; look at how the companies approach technology innovation and who their biggest competitive threats are and why. Subsequently we will look at the technology we feel is the biggest threat to RIM and Apple's market share, Google Android OS. Although the Android isn't a product standing on its own, the use of this technology by mobile phone manufacturers like Motorola, Nokia, LG, HTC and Samsung is impacting market share for RIM and Apple. As technology managers, understand the competition, their technical/innovation threats, and their strengths and weaknesses is important to adapting to the changing maket place. Finally, we draw conclusions as to the future success of RIM and Apple in the Smartphone market given their current technology and the competitive landscape.
