The text of this article has been the basis for the talk held by CJ. Sikkel at the CALAP workshop. It presents examples that demonstrate that a formal description of a text (as is needed for a consistent linguistic analysis) makes different demands on lexicon and paradigm than scholars usually do. The paper offers suggestions for the resolution of the ensuing difficulties.
