An Improved Tour Length Minimization for Single Hop Data Gathering in Wireless Sensor Network

In this article a data gathering algorithm is proposed for collecting data from sensors using a mobile sink. It reduces the data gathering tour length. Mobile sinks collect data from the sensors directly in single hop to prolong sensors' lifetime. Our proposed algorithm is more suitable for the network which is clustered into multiple connected components. A mobile sink is a vehicle equipped with a transceiver to collect data from sensors. It collects data from sensors while moving in the sensory field. A novel component based single hop data gathering algorithm (CBSHDG) is proposed to minimize the tour length of the network. It ensures that all sensors are reachable to the mobile sink within single hop. A single hop data gathering collects data directly from the sensors without using relay node and prolonged the network lifetime. Our proposed algorithm first finds an ordering among the components so that total tour length is less. Thereafter, a component based polling point selection algorithm (CBPPSA) is introduced to find a set of polling points within each component. It ensures that every sensor is reachable from one of the polling points. Our proposed algorithm is simulated in MATLAB to demonstrate its performance.
