Analysis of CAN FD to CAN message routing method for CAN FD and CAN gateway

Hyun Su An, Jae Wook Jeon · 2017

Modern vehicle networks have become more complex due to the increase in number of electronic components as well as a greater variety of functions, and this has resulted in the bandwidth use of existing CAN networks approaching technical limitations. CAN FD has been developed to improve the limited data transfer rate and bandwidth of the conventional CAN protocol, so implementing CAN FD in vehicles is now becoming a real issue. Therefore, research on mixed CAN and CAN FD networks is very important. We propose a gateway system for a CAN and CAN FD mixed network utilizing an effective routing method that is then applied to some cases for validation. When the CAN FD messages are routed, the memory buffer of the ring structure can be used to sequentially conduct routing without missing any data. We also analyze the proper considerations to implement CAN FD to CAN routing, and then apply it in real embedded systems for verification.
