Can Augmented-Reality Technology Augment the Fan Experience?: A Model of Enjoyment for Sports Spectators
Ryan Patricia Rogers, Keith Strudler, Avery Decker, Anna Grazulis · Journal of sports media · 2017
This study examines the largely underexplored intersection of sports spectatorship, information seeking, and entertainment theory. Specifically, this study uses self-determination theory to explore how different gratifications predict an audience member’s enjoyment of a sporting event. In a three-condition experiment, participants performed search tasks using a media guide, a smartphone, or Google Glass. Results indicated that the technology used did not directly impact enjoyment but that the technology did have an indirect impact on enjoyment via feelings of competence and autonomy. Practical applications are discussed.
