Suranya Jayan, Jiangfeng Sun, Dongwan Shin · 2017

Android is the most popular mobile operating system in use today having over a billion users; with that many users, privacy and security are major concerns in Android. Applications on Android have unprecedented access to user information and many of these applications store this information locally on the device. Therefore, it is of utmost importance that this information is stored securely. In this paper, we investigate how applications store such information, the existing security features in Android that secure this information, and the known issues associated with these security measures. The results of our study show that a majority of applications store user information on the device in an insecure form. However, the existing Android architecture is not enough to address the security and privacy concerns associated with this. Hence, we propose a novel framework which supports applications in storing user information securely and efficiently in an encrypted form on the device.
