A case analysis of node.js I/O performance under Linux environment in various storage media

Node.js [7] also called Node is a server-side JavaScript environment. It is based on Googles runtime implementation the aptly named V8 engine. V8 and Node are mostly implemented in C and C++, focusing on performance and low memory consumption. To determine whether node.js' event-driven structure interfered with its capacity to provide performant asynchronous I/O in this project we present a case analysis of Node.js' I/O performance on the Linux operating system for four typical types of I/O access patterns: sequential read, sequential write, random read and random write, by comparing their performance to a widely-used and accepted I/O benchmarking tool — fio [6], in various storage media (HDD, SSD, RAM). In the study, it is seen that Node.js is able to achieve the same level of efficiency as fio in SSD as also in ext4 filesystem with ordered-journaling mode, under the condition of a single hard disk drive (HDD). And the experiments with tmpfs and RAM had some stuck ups.
