A novel approach to filter spam SMSs and Android application

SMS is one of the most widely used service of mobile communication. However, an important part of this communication consists of unwanted messages called spam. In this study, a new approach for SMS spam filtering and an Android application of this approach is presented and developed. In this method, spam detection is performed based on changes of the UTF-8 values of the characters. The developed approach is tested on two different data sets and 94.64% and 98.85% success rates have been achieved, respectively. The obtained results demonstrate that the developed method can be successfully used.
