Arena project sensor and hw-design

Erkan Emin, Thomas Könberg · 2003

This project is based on the virtual arena concept. The virtual arena aimed to enhance an event for both the local and the remote audience. In this case the event was a hockey match in Lulea’s hockey arena. Our part of the project was to design the hardware that was to be placed on the hockey players. The hardware consisted of sensors for measuring breathing- and pulse rate and a wireless system for transmitting data from the hockey player to the rink side where it would be received for distribution to the audience. To put this into practise several types of sensors were investigated. After evaluation small implementations of the sensors were made. The work resulted in a successful demonstration of the concept in Lulea’s hockey arena during a live event. The conclusion must be that the interest for the concept has increased in recent years but more work has to be done both on the sensor- and communication technology to make it more useful.
