Control-plane OpenFlow segment routing SDN for network control messages reduction

This research proposes an OpenFlow (OF) segment routing (SR) control-plane software-defined network (SDN) to reduce the number of control messages between the source and destination hosts. In the study, the conventional OpenFlow SDN and the proposed OpenFlow SR SDN were emulated and assessed under three network configurations: tube, shortest path and load balance. The results revealed that the number of control messages between source and destination under the conventional OpenFlow SDN was halved (approximately 50%) under the OpenFlow SR SDN, indicating the superiority of the proposed scheme over the conventional technology.
