A rule based system developed for vi bration oriented di ag nosis of turbomachi nery for fa ult identification and for predic tive maintenance is described. The system is implemented in a PC based PROLOG environment, wi th the Dempster Shafer theory of belief functions utilized for evidential support of hypotheses.Th e di rect uses of PROLOG for knowledge rep resentation, rule interpretation, control strategy, and user in teraction are described.Th e vi bration fault di agnosis system is considered to be one component of a comprehensive system for turbomachinery.Th e framework of thi s comprehensive system comprises hi erarchical levels of generic rules (surface knowledge) and generic analyti-135 cal si mulation models (deep knowledge). The root level includes the surface and deep knowledge for vibration, bearings, lubri cants , seals, gears and couplings, and mechanicaVmetallurgical aspects of fault detection.Another level comprises the generic but specific knowledge base for various categories of turboma chinery, i.e. , pumps, compressors, turbines, engines. The third level includes the installation specific rules, maintenance, re pair, and tr oubleshooting logs, and other specific usage experi ences. It is shown that each component of the comprehensive system can be vi ewed as a di stinct expert system whi ch can be developed and utilized independently of the other subsystems whi le the comprehensive system is evolved over a period of ti me.
