This paper presents a novel MPEG media transport (MMT) system based Desktop-as-a-Service (DaaS) system. Compared with the legacy virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) based DaaS systems which consider the screen as a combination of various elements (such as text, images, icons etc.) and maintain multiple data channels for communication, the new system treats the desktop screen rendering as a video streaming application, where screen content coding extension of high-efficiency video coding (SCC) is used for real-time desktop video compression. We also extend the MMT with the updates on the data model of media processing unit (MPU), and additional input and channel status signaling messages, to facilitate the interactive communications. Compared with the commercial Red Hat SPICE based DaaS, our proposal could save the network bandwidth by a factor of 2, 7 and 4 respectively for typical video streaming, web browsing and stationary office applications at comparable visual quality. For multiuser scenario, application driven bandwidth allocation is appreciated with noticeable quality improvements compared with the simplest equal bandwidth allocation strategy.
