Feature-based characterization of violin timbre

Timbrai quality of historical violins has been discussed for years. In this paper, we show that it is possible to characterize it from an objective, low-level features perspective. Feature selection algorithms are used to select the features that most characterize historical and contemporary violins. The feature representation of violins is then reduced by means of the T-SNE method. In the low-dimensional space which is obtained, historical violins tend to group together.
