Channel assignment with energy optimization in cognitive wireless sensor networks

The increasing demand on the limited spectrum of unlicensed 2.4 GHz ISM band leads to the coexistence problems, which are one of the major challenges especially for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). The coexistence issue does not only affect the service quality, but also shorten the battery lifetime of the WSN devices. Most works focus on system internal processes without the concern on environmental effects such as interference. This work proposes an intelligent channel assignment with transmit power optimization for Cognitive Wireless Sensor Networks (CWSNs). The adaptation includes dynamic channel assignment to avoid interference and power level adjustment in order to maintain the service quality as well as optimize energy usage. A simulation model has been developed to test the system performance of our proposed method along with the validation results from an analytical model. A test bed has been setup to observe the system performance in terms of power consumption and throughput. Results show that systems integrated with our proposed method have better performances as well as improve energy usage efficiency in comparison with the traditional IEEE 802.15.4 based WSN.
