In recent technological advancement such as smart grid applications, security surveillance & border protection, internet of things, disaster management & other smart home applications exhilarate the deployment of autonomous, self-configured, large-scale wireless sensor networks. Efficient power conservation is crucial concerns for sensor networks to operate in the hostile environment. Therefore network longevity techniques have attracted a great deal of research consideration for developing optimized operation of battery constrained wireless sensor networks. Clustering is standout amongst the most optimized techniques used for network lifetime maximization & reduces the power consumption as well. This paper describes the recent development in a wireless sensor network including their applications, factor affecting the design of sensor network & general classification of various clustering schemes. Clustering protocols for homogeneous wireless sensor network are taken into consideration for high energy utilization.
