Designing a mobile application for agricultural knowledge management

Janse van Rensburg, Chanelle Vermaak · 2017

Agricultural activities play a big role in the South African economy. It is estimated that at least 8.5 million people in South Africa receive an agriculturally related income. Farming knowledge disintegrates with each passing generation [18]. One way to prevent the deterioration of knowledge is to design a mobile application that can house all the required information on crops: an agricultural knowledge management tool. The aim of this paper is to discuss the design science research process of a mobile application for agricultural knowledge management. The research aims to contribute to existing literature, highlighting specific HCI principles for mobile application design, and strengthening the argument thereof with a supporting requirements analysis obtained from subject matter experts. The conceptual relationship between the aforementioned factors can be used as suggested design guidelines for a mobile application for agricultural knowledge management. The research paper is offered according to the phases of a DSR framework.
