Analysis on online news consumption using mobile device and Facebook referral

Ubiquitous use of mobile device and immense expansion of social networks has reshaped news consumption. In this paper, we analyze the user access to online news using different kinds of devices, either through desktop or mobile device in terms of different days and different hours. Then, we examine the user access using Facebook referrals and finally we investigate the different types of content pages accessed by users from Facebook referral. We collect Web server logs from an online newspaper for 20-days period (19 November 2016-8 December 2016). We found that almost half of the pages from Facebook referral accessed through mobile device. In terms of type of device for Facebook referrals, there is a strong correlation between the types of devices. For contents accessed by Facebook referrals, popular pages are articles as compared to the main page of the news site.
