Aesthetics in interaction design

Mati Mõttus · 2017

This summary describes a doctoral thesis in its final stage. The research addresses users' aesthetic perception during interaction, implying that aesthetic studies in HCI should extend beyond visual perception of beauty as well as not to become limited by the appearance of objects. The literature review showed that users aesthetic perceptions can be explained through aesthetic attributes. The review also revealed that studies in the past used mainly theories and expertise to elicit aesthetic attributes. Mixed method research design was taken in current thesis to tackle the problem and elicit personal aesthetic constructs directly from users. Finally, 23 aesthetic categories were proposed as a result of the research. In conclusion, an additional study of adding top level aesthetic categories is proposed to complete the thesis.
