Combined approach for binarization of offline handwritten documents

Proper extraction of words from handwritten documents is a tedious task. In this paper we discuss an effective method for binarization of handwritten document images. Document binarization is a preprocessing step for the recognition of offline handwritten words. Various techniques used for binarization are discussed in this paper. The proposed method is evaluated and got good results. This approach is developed as part of the development of offline Malayalam handwritten word recognition. This work is inspired by Sauvola, Niblack and Otsu.
