Processing speech involves recognition of words in the face of acoustic variability. This dissertation examines the role of processing speaker variability in Mandarin word recognition.Tone language users contrast meaning using fundamental frequency patterns.Given the role of fundamental frequency in both voice and words, this dissertation addresses how speaker variability is resolved by tone language users. Two short-term priming experiments were designed to investigate the effect of speaker variability on processing phonological form and meaning in Mandarin word recognition.
