Telecommunication networks in operation throughout the world generally have been designed to satisfy the requirements of one particular type of communication service. For example, the telephone network has been designed for voice communications, the telex network for slow speed message communications and the packet switching network for low-to-medium volume data communications. However, during the last decade there has been a growing interest among telecommunications administrations in developing a single integrated network capable of providing all types of communication service.
