A comparative analysis of mathematical markup languages

Socio-environmental auditing tools can measure a company's carbon footprint. Those tools use mathematical markup languages (MML's) to represent formulae on screen. At the time of writing, no literature studies have been conducted to compare several mathematical markup languages. Five different MML's have been chosen for this experimental research to explore which one is the most convenient markup language, based on their intrinsic qualities (popularity, tool support, and expressiveness) and extrinsic qualities (comprehensibility, ease of editing, and user perceptions). We found that LaTeX is the most favourably concerning the intrinsic qualities, and we found no significant results regarding the extrinsic qualities. Further research with different treatments has to be done to measure the comprehensibility and ease of editing of the MML's.
