Scenario-oriented small cell network design for LTE-LAA and Wi-Fi coexistence on 5 GHz

Long Term Evolution (LTE) carrier aggregation with 5GHz unlicensed national informational infrastructure (UNII) band has been suggested by the industry as a good solution to handle the rapidly increasing amount of data traffic. To provide fair coexistence of LTE-licensed assisted access (LTE-LAA) and Wi-Fi on 5 GHz, several coexistence mechanisms have already been proposed. Nevertheless, as one of the major challenges, we are still lack of such coexistence mechanism that could control the moderate LTE-U/Wi-Fi interference, i.e., below a level of -62dBm. What's more, due to the fact that LTE-LAA duty-cycling is compatible with Wi-Fi device in 5GHz, it should also be considered whether or not the coexistence of those two technologies is necessarily needed. Therefore, it is reasonable to believe that the coexistence of LTE-LAA and Wi-Fi in 5GHz might cause the performance of both sides to deteriorate to some extent, implying a deliberate decision-making process should be experienced before coexistence implementation. In this article, we survey a comprehensive summary of the scenario-oriented coexistence, which practically takes features of a specific scenario as the base for designing deployment mode of LTE-LAA and/or Wi-Fi. Extensive simulations in a realistic indoor scenario is performed over iBuildNet®to evaluate the developed scheme.
