Standard MIDI file production as the focus of a broad computer science course

Robert E. England · Journal of computing sciences in colleges · 2017

This paper describes a broad course in computing that the author developed with the goal of attracting and engaging students with a limited Computer Science background but with an interest in computer music applications. In support of the ultimate goal of producing a program to write standard MIDI files, students were introduced to a wide variety of topics from across the standard undergraduate CS curriculum, including examining and working with data at the binary level, designing original data structures for a specific non-computer related problem, and interpreting formal language grammars.
