Hand Off Effects on Cellular CDMA System

This paper discusses the effect of salt Hand off gain on the capacity and coverage of the cellular CDMA system. The impact of antenna beamwidth on Handoff area is also discussed. The analysis is done with power control on a two-tier-cell layout with uniform distribution of mobiles and flat earth fading environment using Monte Carlo deterministic simulation. The capacity is analyzed based on a set of predefined values of reverse and forward link parameters. Based on the results from simulation, the soft handoff gain does improve capacity and reduce interference in the CDMA system. The percentage of area in handoff, the optimized antenna beamwidth and the optimized handoff threshold to accommodate maxmium capacity with minimum tradeoff or extra equipmenty is also studied. Another finding is that interference ratio can not accurately determine the reverse link capacity. The loading factor (power pie concept) needs to be considered with the value of interference ratio to accurately decide the reverse link capacity.
