Database management systems

2014

After a short recall of the main objectives of a data base management system and their adequation to process control, the article expresses that the DBMSs available on the market, for performance reasons, are not adapted to control centres.Manufacturers have to develop their own DBMS, with features that will allow to reach adequate response time keening all the advantages of the DBMS approach. The main characteristics of a DBMS package, PPODIGE are presented : the model, the associated languages (DDL, DML, MML) and the procedures for creation and use of data base. Some figures are given which indicate that, although the PPMS approach leads to a non zero overhead in computer systems when compared to the traditional file management, this approach is compensated by several advantages. The conclusion presents some directions for future developments.
