Nowadays, omnidirectional cameras become more and more attractive for automotive applications. Due to their large field of view, great potential exists for novel applications in the automotive domain using omnidirectional cameras. This thesis presents a new information system based on a single omnidirectional camera integrated with the side-view mirror. The ambiance next to the car door is monitored in order to avoid collisions while door opening. The information system also extracts approaching drivers and estimates their body heights to automatically pre-adjust the seat for a better ingress. The focus of this thesis is on the development of robust image processing algorithms for absolute body height estimation and the extraction of 3D ambiance information with a single omnidirectional camera.
