Q factor is a powerful tool for reservoir characterization and hydrocarbon detection. Q factor estimations are often obtained from VSP data, poststack data and prestack data. There are few methods to extract the Q factor from time migration gathers with the NMO stretch. In this paper, we proposed a method based on S transform to estimate the quality factor from time migration gathers. We first introduce a NMO stretch correct factor β to compensate the NMO stretch in ST domain. Based on these, we can obtain a correct time frequency representation of time migration gathers. Then, we deduce a linear relationship between a new defined parameter M and the log spectral ratio to estimate the Q factor. The parameter M is a function of frequency, source wavelet, travel time and offset. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, we apply it to synthetic data examples to estimate Q factor.
