The residual-based variational multiscale method was proposed as a new approach to large eddy simulation of turbulent flows. Recently it was suggested to track the subgrid scales of the problem in time, in contrast to the original procedure of assuming the subgrid scales quasi-static. However, the effect of the incorporation of time-dependent subgrid scales has only been investigated for laminar flow problems. In the present study we will analyse that effect as well as the effect of including additional subgrid-scale terms accounting for the nonlinear term of the Navier-Stokes equations for the well-known test case of turbulent flow in a channel. For that purpose, we employed a time integration scheme based on a generalised-method.
